Destiel: January Fic Recs

JANUARY FIC RECS

I got lazy this month.

At least half of these were fic requests at DESTIEL FOREVER on Facebook. This season has been really emotional for me - I'm so scared for Dean, it's making me sick. I've found myself reading a lot of AUs lately; all human, fix-it fic, post-series fluff... I just want my boys to be happy and for Dean and Cas to be canon. Is that too much to ask!?

Maybe he didn't need to wrap his arms around Cas at night. And maybe their legs didn't need to be so tangled. But Cas had read somewhere that being that close could synchronize their heartbeats and make them calmer at night and therefore it would help them sleep better. It was for scientific reasons that they were a heaped pile of grabby octopus legs and blankets every night.

Dean and Cas have been best friends since they were six. They're now twenty and in college and sharing a bed nearly every night. Yet, they still deny that they are together. Everyone around them knows Dean and Cas are in love with each other, they are just waiting for the two to figure it out for themselves.

Nineteen-year-old Dean has developed a crush on Castiel Novak. However, aside from being thirteen years older than Dean, Castiel has been a close friend of the family for years. What's a boy to do?

"I can feel your longing, Dean. It's like a prayer. It's almost deafening.”

Dean's not the type to fall in love. But a playful song reference in an otherwise formal email correspondence made him want to know this chick he was talking to. Turned out he was right, this Cas was the most awesome girl he'd ever talked to, and slowly but surely, he found out that he just hadn't met the right girl yet. Maybe he hadn't met her still…

Dean tries to push the words he wants to say out of his throat. He tries, but they crowd his mouth and sit like stones on his tongue, fit to choke him. “The thing is, I wasn’t kidding about the whole claustrophobia deal.”

As a grease monkey turned college freshman, Dean's constantly three seconds away from being stressed out of his mind. It hardly helps that he's finally figuring out his sexuality in his thirties.

What might help with that stress is a little phone number (and a big credit card bill). If he can't figure out how to be bisexual in person, he can at least give it a go over the phone, right?

Dean couldn’t remember the last time he truly smiled, the last time he felt needed, wanted, appreciated, included. The last time his wife gave him time, the last time she looked at him with love in her eyes, the last time they even had sex! Anna was so busy nowadays! She didn’t even have time for their 4 year old daughter. Dean is always there for Claire, taking her to preschool, setting up playdates for her, taking her out to the park. But Dean also has a small business to run and there’s so much piled up on his shoulders.

Dean’s secretary, Charlie, has enough of it and convinces him to hire a nanny. To Dean’s surprise, his daughter’s new nanny is actually a dude; a dude with ridiculously blue eyes and intense stare. Dean isn’t sure about this, but since he really doesn’t have the time to look for a nanny himself, he lets Castiel stay. In just a few months Dean and his daughter’s new baby sitter fall into a sort of comfortable routine. Castiel is everything Dean has always missed since Anna started working.

Dean listens to the Impala idle for a good few minutes before he hears Sam even make a move to leave, his sigh radiating disappointment. Head thumping against the steering wheel, he watches Sam peel himself out of the front seat with all the exhaustion of a man that let his anger get the best of him, and slam the door in his wake. The trunk pops open, thunks closed; footsteps echo across the garage, and still, Dean sits, blinking with wet eyes, nose pressed to the center of the wheel.

“Get out of the car,” Castiel says from the backseat, and Dean’s stomach clenches even tighter.

Dean and Cas have some regrets. But only some.

Dean eases Baby down the frontage road, trying not to look in the rearview mirror as his home gets smaller and smaller behind him.

He’s done this a hundred times. He’s driven down this road in the soft morning light, heading out to some little town in some distant corner of the country. This is a job like any other.

“It’s not like we’re never coming back,” Cas says from the passenger seat.
